Upcoming Events
Hello everyone,

First off, I’d like to give a reminder that for approximately the next six weeks, there will be club fairs at the freshman orientations.  We will have a club table set up at every orientation.  In addition, we have set-up and break-down duty for six of the dates.  This allows us to earn money for our club as well as get SA participation credit.

Volunteers are needed to help work these orientations.  The list of dates and times can be found on the calendar on our website, www.ubseds.org.  If you would like to help out at an orientation, please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it indicating which dates you would like to help at.

There are also a few other events that are of interest.  One is the NewSpace conference, which is July 23-25 in Silicon Valley, CA.  Although this is not an official UB-SEDS event, a few members will be attending, and there is still space for more people.  More details can be found at the official website, http://newspace2010.spacefrontier.org/.  If you are interested in attending, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Another event is the SpacePort USA exhibit that will be running at the Monroe County Fair next week, July 14-July 18.  Volunteers are always needed for this event – if you are in the Rochester area and interested in helping out, please let us know.

Another event that may be interesting to SEDS members is NYPower, a rocketry event held in Geneseo, NY from July 23-25.  More information can be found on their website, http://marsclub.org/nypower09/.

If you are interested in attending any of these events, please let us know.

Summer Updates and Nanosat

Hello everyone,

UB-SEDS has a number of activities planned for this summer.  Many of our project groups will continue to be active.   If you are in the Buffalo area this summer or wish to keep informed of summer events, we are setting up a listserv specifically for that purpose.  To join this listserv, please send an email with “summer” in the subject line to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We are also forming a project group for the Nanosat competition.

The University Nanosat Program is a joint program between the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate (AFRL/RV), the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).  It is a program in which university students design a small satellite to be entered into the competition.  The university that is chosen will have the chance to build the satellite and have it launched into space.  This program is held every other year.

This is an exciting program that presents a great opportunity to learn about satellite design, research and development, payload development, integration, and flight test.

More information about the Nanosat Program can be found on the official website:

http://www.vs.afrl.af.mil/UNP/index.html

We will be applying to this program in the fall; thus, a project group needs to be formed now to start work on this project.  If you are interested in joining this project group or would like more information, please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with “Nanosat” in the subject line.

Have a great summer!

Astronomy Night: April 29th, 2010

These are some of the pictures taken by UB-SEDS members during an Astronomy event on the night of April 29th, 2010. The telescope was set up in the Special Events Field across from the Student Union and we were able to use our CCD imaging camera to capture the moon.

Astronomy Day at the Buffalo Museum of Science

On Saturday, April 24, 2010, UB SEDS members participated in Astronomy Day presented by the Buffalo Astronomical Assosciation at the Buffalo Museum of Science.   We joined many members of the BAA and brought our Celestron C10-NGT telescope with solar filter to the roof of the museum to offer views of the sun.

UB-SEDS Astronomy event RECAP - April 1st 2010

Hello everyone,

The following pictures are from UB-SEDS Astronomy Project Group's first event in 3 weeks. On a warm Thursday night, we were able to see Mars and the Moon along with many other stars through our new Celestron C10-NGT telescope. The event lasted 2 hours, starting from 10:00pm till around midnight. We had a great turnout on a great observing night. Anywhere from 35 to 40 people showed up and looked through the telescope as they marveled at the sight of the Red Planet. If you are interested in being a part of future events, simply send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with "ASTRONOMY" in the subject line.

Thanks and Clear Skies!
